[mew-int 00638] using gnupg with mew

Hi,

I could not figure out how to instruct
mew to use gpg instead of default pgp.
A friend suggested to put

(setq mew-init-hook
      '(lambda ()
      ;;
        (setq mew-pgp-ver 3)
      ))

in $HOME/.emacs file but it didn't work out--
mew still complains 'pgp does not exist'
when I try to PGP sign a message.

I could not find a doc about how to do that.
Would you please point me to a doc about this?

What I tested was "Mew version 2.1 on Emacs 20.7 / Mule 4.0 (HANANOEN)".
