Thanks for that description.  This must be very annoying.  

I am not seeing this behavior when I test the latest bbdb-mew.el
and bbdb-com.patch for mew 2.1 + bbdb 2.32 + emacs 21.1.  They
are located at:

I'm confused.  Would you like bbdb-mew to preserve the mew
keybinding for ":" when bbdb is working with mew?  This seems reasonable
to me.
