I tried this on a newsgroup which contains a few hundred unread
messages. However, I could not re-produce it.

You can see what's going on as follows:

* Set mew-debug to 'net.
	(setq mew-debug 'net)

Then access to a newsgroup. Communications with your NNTP server are
recorded in the *Mew debug* buffer. Observe the buffer to see what
happened.

* Note that the ID of the last (read) message is contained in the file
  named ".mew-msgid". You can find this file in ~/Mail/.nntp/. Observe
  its content on every communication.
