I believe it's not Mew's problem.

Mew uses bold font also.  If you changed only medium font size,
bold font might be displayed as original size.

By the way, I'm using this:

-- ~/.Xresource -- 
Emacs*Font: -misc-gothic-medium-r-normal-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
XEmacs*Font: -*-*-medium-r-normal-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
---- 

And I tried the following configuration.  (Edit ~/.Xresource and
run `xrdb ~/.Xresource'.)

-- ~/.Xresource -- 
Emacs*Font: -*-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-20-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
XEmacs*Font: -*-*-medium-r-normal-*-20-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
---- 

That did work for Mew and other buffers.
