[mew-int 00814] Mew error on startup

My system is emacs 21.2 (and I've tried emacs 21.1) on a gnu/linux
system w/ a 2.4.17 kernel. I've tried with the install from my linux
distro (gentoo) and have tried compiling myself. Mew version is 2.2.
It hangs on the mew startup screen. Here is my output after toggling
toggle-debug-on-error.

Does anyone know what this could be (or how to get more verbose error
output)? I've installed mew 2.2, 2.1, etc. on linux and windows
machines with no problems and cannot figure out what's going on here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
