Maybe a stupisd question, but do you have grep functioning on your
system? To be honest, I don't know how mew implements this
search. Some things are now not elisp, but C code so it runs faster
(like scanning of directories as far as I know). Myabe mew is using
the external grep program your OS should have.
Could it be that? Problably the author or somebody who knows the code
can help... I'm using Mew 2.2 on Linux Redhat 7.3.
