I have no problem when applying the mew-2.2+mew-int-00849.diff
patch to Debian mew 2.2-7, as follows:

  $ ls
  mew-2.2+mew-int-00849.diff  mew_2.2-7.dsc
  mew_2.2-7.diff.gz           mew_2.2.orig.tar.gz
  $ dpkg-source -x mew_2.2-7.dsc
  dpkg-source: extracting mew in mew-2.2
  $ cd mew-2.2
  $ ls -l mew-edit.el*
  -rw-r--r--    1 tats     tats        34005 Feb 21  2002 mew-edit.el
  $ patch -p1 <../mew-2.2+mew-int-00849.diff 
  patching file mew-edit.el
  $ ls -l mew-edit.el*
  -rw-r--r--    1 tats     tats        34573 Oct  3 20:27 mew-edit.el

mew 2.2-8 (unstable) also has no problem.
