I tried the above, but I can't reproduce the problem.

On my system, Debian sid i386, emacs21 21.2-5, and Mew 3.0.68, I
can see the Multipart/Alternative message even if I didn't have
~/.emacs and ~/.mew.el.  If I press `:', the part-1 displays the
text, and the part-2 says `Size: 801 bytes'.
