more/less/w3m : no ^M's in any of the messages
vi : ^M in the body (not the headers) of all the messages
marked in "blue" (i guess this is actually vim-enhanced)
mew ("Message" mode) : some files show the ^M in the body,
some don't
xemacs (in "Fundamental" mode) : same as mew
i really don't think i changed much, and am very confused
