My, apologies, yes I was talking about local folders as Kazu guessed
correctly.

As Tatsuya recommended that I download, compiled and installed 4.0.64
and ran the test again. Here are the results.
     (all but mew version is constant)
     local folder 4,500 messages - one file per message
     Emacs 20.7.1

Mew 3.3
    1:44 min

Mew 4.0.62
    4:47 min

Mew 4.0.64
    3:00 min

So there is a bit better performance with Mew-4.0.64 but it is still
about twice as slow.

Please let me know if there is anything else that you would like me to
try.
