Thank you. I just did a new emerge with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" and got
the 4.1 release. It turns out that the Mew.png image is in
/usr/share/mew. The mew-icon-directory is set by

(load "/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/site-gentoo")
