I figured out that this is only possible with the mule-ucs package
installed and the following (perhaps not all of them) variables set:

(setq mew-charset-latin "utf-8")
(setq mew-charset-m17n "utf-8")
(setq mew-charset-input-method 'utf-8)

However, I've troubles with mule-ucs with gettext-el and that's why I
had to switch to Wanderlust.
