Yes, Debian Etch provides mew 4.2 and mew-beta 5.1.52~0.20061031.

If you installed Mew by `make install', remove the installed files
from /usr/local/bin, /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp, etc. to use
the Debian package.

Debian package's starup set configuration such as load-path, autoload,
etc.  For further details, see /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50mew*.
