Mew 4 or later are independent on message numbers. That is, message
numbers do not apper in Summary mode. There is no reason to modify the
message numbers form the Mew point of view.

Mew 5.1 will support HyperEstraier(HE), which is a multi-lingual full
text search engine for UNIX OSes. If you change the message numbers,
inconsistency will happen on the index of HE.

If you want to know the message number of the current message, type
"=". This command copy the full path to the cut buffer of your window
manager.

If you yet want to pack your folder, type "C-uO".

The modeline of Summary tells you the number.
