That explanation makes sense, and is consistent with my
observations. However, it doesn't help me dealing with mails sent by
Mac users. The ":" helps if I expect an attachment to be there (thanks
for that hint), but in many cases I might miss the attachment
completely.

Telling Jobs to fix his broken mailer when every other mail
client doesn't seem to have a problem doesn't seem a very promising
approach.
