Did you sign his/her public key by yourself?

If not, please do it like this:

% gpg --edit-key <mailaddress>
Command> sign
Command> save
Command> quit

If his/her public key is really expired, please obtain new one from
him/her.

This is S/MIME, not PGP. So, this is not necessary.
