They didn't fix it right: If a unibyte string contains a non-ASCII
character (easy; any latin-1 character will do) then aset'ing a
character >= 256 on the string will fail. I have tried to reopen a
discussion of this on the emacs-devel list; we will see what the
responses are.
(I found out by having mew choke on another malformed spam message.)
