Hello,

I want to make a local backup of all e-mail currently stored in
gmail, and use Hyper Estraier to index and search this e-mail
archive. However, indexing does not seem to work as described in the
manual. Specifically, pressing "kM" does not index all messages in
my Mail folder (more detailed description of the "problem" below).

How do other members of this list index and search their messages?
I'm also considering using google desktop search, has anybody had any
experience with this? (using linux and emacs 23)

I use the following directory structure:
~/Mail
     /#imap
     /from
         /Jane
         /Jim
	/Joe
	/...
     /sent
     /...

The folders without "#" will then appear in mew as "+inbox"
"+from/Jane" etc...

I have noticed, that the only way to index messages with Hyper
Estraier, is to go to a specific folder, and press "km" when visiting
this folder. (For example, going to "+from" and pressing "km" will
index all messages in "/from" and its subdirectories). However, this
requires me to regularly go to every different folder, and index this
folder, in order to be able to search. Alternatively, I could add
one extra directory level (for example, put everything in a directory
called "archive", go to the archive directory in mew and press "km"),
but I think this is not necessary?

thank you,

Thomas
