If you are running a version of linux(?) then have you seen crossover
(www.codeweavers.com). They have a commercial release of wine that
works quite well. I have the plugins version which enables me to run
wordview, excelview and powerpointview. This pretty much solved my
problems when receiving work documents. I can even cut and paste from
wordview into emacs or elsewhere. They also have a version (more
expensive) that allows you to run word 97 or 2000 and other office
tools on linux.
I too have tried and failed to get all the bits working to view word
documents inline (would be nice). I was using wv for a while to view
word docs in a browser (bound to a key) but wordview is better.
