May you describe your problems? I have this system installed and it
works fine for me -- but, granted, I do not receive that many Word
docs. All I had to do basically was to put

(require 'mew-w3m)
(setq mew-prog-html '(mew-mime-text/html-w3m nil nil))

in "~/.mew.el". See also the followind message and its references:

Cheers,
ChriS

P.S. For those using RPM there is also the package alien that would
allow you to convert .deb (http://packages.debian.org/testing/text/wv.html)
to .rpm

P.P.S There are also abiword (http://www.abisource.com/) and
OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/) that allow you to view and
modify Word stuff.
