The message "Filter is invalid" means that a field name or "head"
is required for Hyper Estraier filter.
(mew-pick-filter-est-head-fields is used for "head")

The following keys worked for me.

  k? RET from!=henri to,cc=mew.org RET
  k? RET head=mew.org RET
  k? hyper estraier RET head=mew.org RET
  k? hyper estraier RET RET
