hi!

i managed to solve this problem. it was really the external
executables mewl, mewcat, mewencode and mewdecode. they were not the
current version. i had to download the source from the website,
enter the bin directory, type "./configure" and "make install", and
copy and overwrite the executables into my /sw/bin/ folder.

you can test the version number of your mew executables by calling
them with the -v parameter, for example "mewl -v".
